Dimensions Dance Theater’s Free Dance Program

Dimensions Dance Theater (DDT), founded by Deborah Vaughan in 1972, stands as a multicultural institution located in Oakland that offers a variety of dance styles such as African, Jazz, Modern, and other cultural dance. They have traveled globally to places such as Nigeria, Jordan, and Cuba, engaging in collaborations with artists like Hugh Masekela and Cab Calloway.

Dimensions Dance Theater not only focuses on dance, but brings attention to social issues such as racial tensions and the Black Panther Party’s legacy through performances such as their 1994 Lily Cai Chinese dance collaboration.

The traditional dance styles offered by Dimensions Dance Theater are rooted in African and African Diaspora cultures. Examples include Congolese, Zulu, and Haitian dance styles, as well as a Jazz and Blues program that incorporates both African and spiritual elements. In addition, they have cultural fusion programs that highlight the cross-cultural exchange between African, Arab, and European influences by fusing Moroccan melodies with Jazz. Additionally DDT provides educational performances, workshops, and in-school programs to increase their student’s understanding of African dance history and its impact on American culture.

Rites of Passage is a youth program provided by DDT that features a variety of traditional dance styles such as West African, Haitian, and Cuban, alongside modern forms such as Hip-hop, Ballet, and Jazz. The Rights of Passage program teaches dance to children in the East Bay ages eight through eighteen, with the goal of building cultural awareness. DDT also provides pre-professional training for older students in a variety of dance styles through a program called

 The Dimensions Extensions Performance Ensemble.

Dimensions not only host classes; but host performances. Their upcoming performance Healing Joy by choreographer Laurie Fleurentin and DDT founder Deborah Vaughan, will premiere October 12. The show opens with a ritual led by Lusiah Teish, as the rest of the performance will feature Haitian dance and music mixed with contemporary dance by Jeff Pierre and poet Deborah Major.

Dimensions Dance Theater opens their arms to people of all backgrounds, ages, and skill levels, whether you’re interested in seeing performances, a beginner starting your journey in dance, or a professional in search of training. If this is something you’re interested in, you can visit them at #308 1428 Alice Street in Oakland or call them at (510) 465-3363, to register for a class or get tickets to a performance.
