A Look at Oakland Tech’s Clubs

With an unprecedented amount of clubs this year, it can be daunting to find the right one for you. Consequently, to help you navigate the sea of academic, sport-related, or…peculiar ones, we’ve compiled some short reviews. So without further adieu…

The crazed Improv Club gathers every Monday at lunch in A3 for a supportive community and an opportunity to explore creativity on stage in a safe environment. Games like “freeze”, “secretary”, “I am a tree”, and “hotspot” are some favorites. Club president Vaughn Easterday said, “There has not been a single club meeting where someone hasn’t ended up dead on the floor.” So while this club is definitely not for those who love peace and quiet, if you’re in the mood for something crazy or getting out of your comfort zone, Improv Club is for you!

Next, we have the infamous Needle Felting Club where every Wednesday felting enthusiasts cloister themselves in room 223 to stab themselves with needles… Just kidding! Needle Felting – a patience-requiring activity – involves stabbing wool with spurred needles to tighten the fibers into cool designs and sculptures. “Needle felting is not a craft,” declared club president Zoe Psomas, “it’s an art!” She then continued, saying materials are provided by the organization Living Felt and that later in the year they may even visit big sculpture felters in San Jose. So if you’re patient and/or interested in stabbing something, what’s holding you back?

Tea Club! Yes…that’s right folks, this club is all about tea. Upon arriving at room 218 on a Friday lunch, we were welcomed by a hospitable tightly knit community and of course, delightful tea cups from a fancy black box. ”We talk about tea, drink tea, and spill the tea,” said senior Ansel Chan, president of the tea club. Some tea favorites, he said, are jasmine, white peony, and a Taiwanese high mountain oolong. They’ve also gone to tea tastings at Tea On, a Piedmont-based tea cafe. All in all, we felt at home in this quaint welcoming community, and we were even offered their weekly blend!

Finally, the glorious Cheese Club… Every Thursday in room 223, cheese enthusiasts consume and learn about different cheeses and their political/environmental significance while chatting and bonding. “Cheese is a universal connector,” said club president Rickie Shea Dinkin. With over 60 sign-ups and donations from the head cheese monger at Market Hall, it’s a diverse, fun, educational, and delicious club that everyone should consider joining.
