A Closer Look Into Oakland Tech’s Cool Clubs

We’re back at it again with some more cool clubs! Yes, just like last time, we scoured the many different Oak Tech clubs, and picked out some of the most interesting ones just for you.

Movie Club gathers every Tuesday at lunch in Room 103 to discuss cinematic masterpieces (occasionally over donuts) and vote on which one to watch next. However, this bustling, happy club is not for the faint of heart; adult themes are included! But don’t be too worried. You will be sheltered from anything too traumatic, for they’ve banned controversial films like Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction…and Angry Birds? And they don’t just stay cloistered in classrooms; they also venture to the New Parkway Theater to view the theater’s specials free of charge. So if you love movies, join! Or as club president Maya Mitchel put it: ”Join it right now; if you don’t, I’ll friggin’ steal your Netflix!”

And now…perhaps the most delicious club of them all: the Social Baking Club! Junior Rosie Savage founded this club so enjoyers of baked goods (eaters and bakers alike) could gather during Tuesday lunches in Room 218  to bring sweets, hang out, eat, do homework, and socialize. This club has taken off since its inception just this year and has quickly grown to over 50 people per meeting. So… “If you need something to eat – or something sweet – join now!” Rosie said happily. “Or the Cookie Monster will get you…” she added more ominously.

Next, Anime Club, which meets in Room 255 every day at lunch! Sophomore Lathel Douglas – the founder and club president – has big dreams for this club, mentioning aspirations of eventually starting fundraisers, giveaways, conventions and bake sales. But until that time comes, he meets up at lunch with some fellow anime lovers, where they hangout and watch their favorite anime – Lathel’s being One Piece. With the participants being a bit “quirky”, according to Lathel, this club promises a safe environment for anyone who is interested in anime or just a fun community.

Now…for those of you students who aspire to be BUFF (or just healthier) – join Weightlifting Club. Every Monday lunch in the Boy’s Gym weightlifting room, junior Elwyn and his troop of weightlifting enthusiasts lift to their heart’s content. Elwyn is a very friendly dude, and this club promises to be a safe space absent of ego for all wanting to become more healthy, so don’t be intimidated! “A dozen kids come into the weightlifting room…and then lift safely and correctly with spotters,” he said. “ Never stop pumping iron.”
